What is Note?

 What are notes?

Learning notes starts with some basic music theory. Without theory your effectiveness of playing guitar won't be to the point. It is like playing games without knowing basic rules. You might have skill and talent but somewhere you might feel, there is much more.

So let's jump to our topic. What is note?

Single specific sound by pressing string is note.

When you press any string on the fretboard, specific note is being played.

For example if you press 5th fret of second string you are playing E note. As you can see in the figure below,

Similarly,  when you press 7th fret of 4th string you are playing A note.

And since 1st and 6th strings are E, when you press 3rd fret you are playing G note.

So how can I know this exactly?

First you should know each strong has it's own name i.e

E A D G B E (Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie)

This are also basic notes and there are additional notes which we call them sharp(#) or flat(b). There are 5 sharp notes except B and E. So in total there are 12 notes i.e

E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D#

In fretboard, when you go over one fret of each strings you will get sharp(#) or flat(b) note except B and E since it doesn't have sharp note.

So what does it mean?

Here it gets a bit confusing. One note has two names that depends wether you are going in which order i.e ascending or descending order.

Let me show you example.

In the above figure, you can see G string's notes. As you go in ascending (increasing) order in first fret you get G# and after that A then A# and B. Over one fret you get C note since B doesn't have sharp (#) note and it goes on. Then again, after E note you will get F note since E also doesn't have sharp(#) note.

Let's see this system from descending (decreasing) order. At 12 fret of this G string, you will get G note, as you come below one fret you will get G flat (Gb). Did you see the difference? Same note has different name as you change your order. Let's see more.

As you come below, in 10th fret you get F note and in 9th fret there is no flat and again in 8th fret you get E flat (Eb).
